[edit] General Description
The current center is in deteriorating 60 year old building that is not safe for children and staff. The community and nearby Army base are growing at an unprecedented rate with 100s of new jobs but no childcare available for potential employees. High quality teachers care for and educate 150 children ages infant through school age. There is a wait list of almost 200 at this facility alone. The new facility will increase capacity by 50% and will be safe. The building is $4 million but on hold because of State call backs and therefore still need the $1 million to make this a reality. Shovel Ready Project. Will provide 200 new jobs.
[edit] Points in Favor
Teachers struggle daily with building not appropriate for children; Current Building is unsafe for children; Community has identified lack of childcare as critical; 500 children remain on wait lists; Many on wait lists are low-income, single parents, spouse of deployed soldier - cannot take jobs due to lack of childcare in the community; New facility will increase capacity by 50%; Children should not be put on hold; Parents deserve quality safe childcare so they can work; Building is designed for children and is safe and secure; Building is shovel ready
[edit] Points Against
Based upon the Points in Favor of this proposal, there is a great economic need for it. If that is true, private industry will be more than willing to invest in it and reap the rewards they have earned through their investment. On the other hand, if I (Joe taxpayer) have to pay for it out of my pocket and get nothing for my money (which is what federal funding is), then it must not be a very worthy project.
