Ethanol from common agricultural crops like corn, sugarcane, potato and such are driving up the cost of associative food products with little or no impact on fossil fuel consumption. It is estimated to take 11 acres of corn to power a single automobile for 1 year. Scaling this up will (and has) caused an increase in grain costs which must offset the ethanol production. To make this a viable source of fuel you will need to find an alternative base stock and divert the negative cost impact from food sources. Certain grasses like switch grass or even other bio-fuel sources alge make more sense and do not increase the cost of consumable food sources. To make alternative fuels truly alternative they need to be created from new or reclaimed sources.
