[edit] Points in Favor

This project is important both in terms of safety and commercial applications. On the commercial side, yet keeping the discussion short, a larger runway opens the airport to a wider array of uses. On the safety and public welfare side, this airport is host to firefighting operations for a large area of the country and a longer runway allows for not only a safer take-off/landing for the large fire-bombers that operate here, but allows them to be more effective by conserving fuel because they would no longer need to utilize jet-assisted take-offs here.

Also, the job creation potential is much larger than listed due to the increased utility of the airport.
