It's not an us-against-them; we either build more roads or more bike paths. Roads are more expensive. You can spend 10x this amount to build roads to handle the same number of commuters. Bikes are more efficient so if you can get more people off the roads then there is more room for those still in their cars.
Many of us who ride bikes also own cars and buy gas and pay for road improvements.

Let the bikers pay for it! They get free bike lanes on every new road, courtesy of the motorists who pay road tax in Oregon.
I would understand building more bike paths if there were more people using them. The fact is there really are not that many bikers out there. I do not think it is one of those "If you build it they will come" type of things.
