[edit] General Description

Project Description: The 70th Avenue E. grade crossing structure provides a grade separation over the Union Pacific Railroad. The roadway section over the railroad will provide a four-lane roadway section with bicycle lanes and pedestrian facilities on the structure. On each side of the structure the roadway section widens to five lanes to provide for a two-way left turn lane throughout the remainder of 70th Avenue E. 70th Avenue E. is a major north-south corridor in the City of Fife. It will connect to Pierce County’s Canyon Road extension project and will provide access to the County’s Fredrickson industrial area. This route will provide a truck route from Fredrickson to I-5, SR 167 and the Port of Tacoma. The grade crossing over the Union Pacific Railroad eliminates crossing delays and improves safety at the crossing location. This project is an essential component of the regional rail improvement strategy to enhance freight rail movement to the Ports of Tacoma and Seattle and throughout the Puget Sound Region. This corridor will reduce the heavy volume of trucks utilizing the congested 54th Avenue East corridor through Fife, improving access to I-5 for local commuters. This project is supported by and coordinated with the Union Pacific Railroad, since it will allow UPPR to occupy the tracks for longer periods of time as they assemble trains in their adjacent rail yard. It will also allow for construction of a second UPPR track to facilitate assembly of trains with no impact to the UPPR mainline.
