[edit] General Description
Chugiak-Eagle River Parks, Recreation, & Community Development is seeking from $1M to $2M towards a multi-purpose expansion to the Harry J. McDonald Memorial Center. The expansion will add a second ice sheet, meeting rooms, integrated special needs areas, and indoor walking/jogging track to create a multi-purpose venue for other large community events.
The expansion will enhance and support greater community use for other activities including indoor soccer, wrestling tournaments, trade, dog, craft, and local band shows or special events. Additional improvements include accommodations for ADA accessibility and special needs recreation activities and social involvement.
The expansion is a critical element in addressing expanding community needs and to operate as an affordable, self-sustaining facility. With increased focus on youth health and obesity, crime intervention, special needs programming and social integration, the improvements will support enhanced individual, group, family, and overall community involvement at all levels.
The revised total project budget is expected to range between $5.5M and $7.5M. The requested funding will match the $2M in State funds provided during the 2005 and 2006 legislative session. The local match includes a $2.5M commitment by the Chugiak-Eagle River Parks & Rec Board of Supervisors, anticipated local contributions and a revenue bond. Facility user fees will be used to retire the bond.
The Harry J. McDonald Memorial Center expansion is strongly supported by Chugiak-Eagle River residents, multiple sports groups, and endorsed by the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce.
This project is included in SB256 supplemental bill as part of the fy08 vetoed projects.
