Wiki Description

[edit] General Description

An increasing number of cities and states have used arts and culture infrastructure to catalyze economic investment, animate vacant and blighted property, generate businesses, attract visitors, and foster civic engagement. This long-planned-for neighborhood revitalization project is shovel-ready, has broad community support, has been championed by residents and their leadership bodies for several years. It will provide jobs during construction and will continue to be a job creating engine and small business incubator for decades to come.

[edit] Points in Favor

THIS PROJECT:

1) Has strong neighborhood, citywide, and statewide backing

2) Is not being rushed into production

3) Has been carefully and skillfully planned over a period of over four years

4) Will help stop the creative brain drain currently experienced by our state as young artists and creative professionals are forced to leave for lack of sufficient opportunities

5) Fits into the neighborhood's decade-long plan to foster an arts and culture district as a main element of its revitalization strategy

6) Has built partnerships with job creation and work force development organizations like UAA Small Business Development Center and Nine Star Enterprises that will foster its effectiveness as a small business incubator. It can also house and support a pilot Green Job Corp Training program which will be a collaboration among many community based organizations, unions, the City of Anchorage, and private companies.

7) Is ready to go this summer if the funding is secured

8) Will only be partially funded by the economic stimulus money. The rest will be from other sources including private philanthropic investments

9) Will rehabilitate a piece of blighted property on a vacant lot

10) Will serve our citizens educationally, culturally, artistically, as well as economically

[edit] Points Against

We desperately need a neighborhood health center. This sure seems like a happy project but shouldn't health take a priority.
