Edit the Wiki Description (editing policy)
Sewage water flows downhill.
When it gets to a lift station, large (250 HP to 1,000 horsepower) high pressure electric pumps or natural gas powered pumps take the sewage and pump it uphill towards a sewage treatment plant.
By switching to natural gas pumps, other cities have saved tremendous amounts of money, especially "Peak" electric costs between noon and 7 PM. The larger pumps can use up to 1,000,000 watts per hour.
Adding additional pumping capacity can prevent flooded sewers in event of a mechanical failure to a single pump, or electrical loss to an area. Many times a flooded sewer results in sewage water being released into a open storm drain, leading to a River without further treatment
