The average intersection has 4 northbound, 4 southbound, 4 east and 4 west street traffic lights. Before 1990, these typically would be 130 volt 130 watt long life lightbulbs, rated at 7,000 hours between changes.
This would be about 20 amps of power to run the traffic signal controller and all the lights.
With modern LED traffic lights, it is now going to use about 15% of the power required by the old system. So it is now possible to make the traffic lights solar controlled at least part time. So critical intersections can be converted to have battery backup and solar power systems to run them during the day, and in case of power failure.
It might be possible in the future to reduce the thousands of electric meters, and electric bills paid by the LA Traffic Signal Maintenance Division. Each intersection has it's own meter, and own monthly $125 bill. Changing to LED will reduce that bill considerably.
